Hughes, Jr., Encourages Charleston ILA Locals To Ratify Contract Extension on Nov. 17th;ILA Local 1422 Welcomes ILA Chief To Their Union Hall</h2></td> <td align="right" valign="bottom" class="nav_links"></td> </tr> <tr><td align="right" valign="bottom"><span class="content_date">11/03/2009</span></td></tr> </table> <div class="blue_line"></div> <br> <b>CHARLESTON, SC</b> - Hundreds of ILA rank-and-file members from the Port of Charleston, South Carolina welcomed their International President Richard P. Hughes, Jr., to their port and ILA 1422 s headquarters on Tuesday evening, Nov. 3, 2009. Amid cheers and two standing ovations, several members thanked the ILA Chief for making what they called  a historic visit to their union hall in Charleston, South Carolina to discuss the pending two-year ILA Master Contract extension which ILA members at ports from Maine to Texas can ratify with a vote set for Nov. 17. <br><br> ILA members from three Charleston locals engaged in a question and answer session with President Hughes for nearly three hours, asking questions about the wage increases, removal of container royalty cap and the bridge to bring lower tiered ILA wage earners up to the top rate of pay. President Hughes provided detailed explanations to all their questions and noted that ILA Wage Scale delegate committee members achieved gains in all five major areas of negotiations. <br><br> ILA Vice President and President of Local 1422 Kenneth Riley hosted the meeting with ILA President Hughes at his local s beautiful and spacious headquarters. Though Mr. Riley himself is opposed to the ILA Contract Extension, he noted his appreciation for the ILA leader taking time to visit Charleston to present his reasons why ILA members should vote in favor of the Master Contract extension. <br><br> Also attending the meeting in Charleston were all four top officers from the South Atlantic and Gulf Coast District: Clyde Fitzgerald, President; Michael Dickens, Secretary-Treasurer; Charles Spencer, Executive Vice President and Wilbur Rowel, Assistant Secretary-Treasurer.
